Show review from Thursday metal night at Ralph’s in Worcester

Posted on: August 26, 2013

Philadelphia metal band Surgeon’s music is an ominous thunderstorm. It doesn’t come down on the listener all at once, but rather, encroaches across the darkening sky, dropping a few bits of rain on your face, then a few more, until suddenly you are drenched in a torrent you knew was coming, but is still surprising when it catches you.

There’s a classic metal feel about songs such as “Waves” and “Deadly Are the Words,” harkening back to the Judas Priest era, and the crisp and stentorian vocals give each song both clarity and power. Surgeon performs for Metal Thursday with Freedom’s Reign, Protean Collective and Lore at 9 p.m. Aug. 22 at Ralph’s Chadwick Square Diner, 148 Grove St., Worcester. $7. (Victor D. Infante)
